Anupriya Singpuri

I had been inspired by the stories of young girls donating their lush hair, Ever since I decided to let my hair grow for it, I have been asking everyone who talked about getting a haircut to “make their hair count”. For me, it could have taken a bit longer, since people who are sitting for competitive exams are asked not to change their look till the exams are over, but on one fine night, as I lay restless on my bed, my mind said, “Anupriya, your mother won’t let you do it when you go back home after the exams. It’s now, or never”. So right there, right then, I took a pair of scissors, looked at my sleeping roommates, tied my hair into a neat braid and chopped it off myself. So far, there has been jokes, admiration and even gasps, some elders have been livid at it and most of the youngsters have wholeheartedly supported, one person has even asked if I was sure that the hair won’t be used for “black magic”, but everything is fine. My hairstyle right now doesn’t exactly carries the sleek look of parlour-groomed hair, but I’m extremely happy that I did it. –  Anupriya Singpuri
